Incoming senior and team captain Christine Sorensen (AKA Sea Sore) has spent the past semester in Rome, where she just finished up her finals. She sends us a message and a few photos.

Ciao from Roma!

I cannot believe my time abroad is almost over. It has been one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. I've been able to travel around Europe too which has added to the experience. Everyday on my walk to school I pass ruins, Piazza Navona and St. Peters Basilica. Everywhere I go in Rome there is tons of history and also tons of people. The Roman people are a special breed which has taken time to get used to, but I know when I leave I will miss them. For instance, on my run the other day I saw a man walking around in regular man clothes, but with high heels on. He rocked them.

The Roman people also make intense soccer fans. Rome won against Lazio (it is kind of like a White Sox vs. Cubs game) and EVERYONE in Rome went wild. Wild is an understatement actually. The streets were not silent until 1 am. People were waving flags on their Vespas, out their car windows etc. It was madness. I did go to a Roma soccer match. It was the coolest thing to experience. A lot of that had to do with the fact that David Beckham played and he took off his shirt. ;)


Rome has been great, but I am looking forward to my return and to a wonderful season coming up!

Greece, part II

Cliff diving has happened multiple times.

Hostels are okay at best--I have 45 bug bites from our last one which is not ideal..We also are not allowed to flush toilet paper down most of the toilets in them, so that's fun.



Coolest thing I've done is play pick up soccer against cocky Bulgarian guys who thought they were gonna own us and then when we started playing and BEAT them they shut up, it was legit.

Nafplion and Mykonos have been our favorite places I'd say and we've done some pretty sick hikes to see some cool views/sunsets. I attached a couple of pictures. The first is from Nafplion and the second is from the island of Delos which is right off of Mykanos. Third is our view from our hotel:Paradise Beach.

Foresters, The Greece Contingent

Four of our players are in Greece this quarter, touring the country and learning about Greek culture, politics, and history along with 20 other Lake Forest students and professors.

Above is a photo of a couple of them cliff-diving. Below is a short summary of what they have been up to. (Since they wrote it to their coaches it's heavy on the "we have been working out, promise!" type stuff.)

All is well over here in Greece! I'm working on postcards right now in the lounge of our hostel, about to go on a jog around the Acropolis. Yes, really.

Us soccer girls have been really busy in Greece: we just got back from a 2-day stay in Olympus (Webs and I received the silver and bronze medals in the sprint competition at the site of the first Hellenic games in 776 B.C.E...Joc and BZ were unable to compete due to illness but had they participated the races would have been much closer) and now we have a few days in Athens before we head off to Mykonos for about 4 days. The weather has been wonderful here so we've all been working out quite a bit, relaxing on the beach, and enjoying the fine Greek cuisine--Webs and I tried snails while we stayed on Crete!--but nothing can keep us away from a good ol' Starbucks fix once in a while. Don't fret though, as it is not all fun and games: we have been on-site at sanctuaries, temples, palaces, and have visited a plethora of museums during our stay here.


From Jocelyn:

Tonight, I played soccer with some locals with Emily and Devin (CC was doing laundry, and BZ has been sick). Didn't realize the plan was to jog over to a field to play, so I went in khacki shorts, a fleece, and a regular bra. I looked as ridiculous as the people who ski in jeans, but we won a game and kept up fairly well.

Spring Has Sprung!

The Forester Soccer Blog has been quiet lately but the players have been hard at work: in the classroom, in the weight room, on the basketball court, the handball court, and on the (hockey) ice. But the always-indoors time of year in the Midwest has come to a close--it's 70 degrees in Chicago today, so blog and outdoors activity will be picking up quickly.

And now that Spring Break is over, and the end of the semester and the academic year are in sight, the real work begins.

Our Conference recently approved a spring season, so for the next few weeks the Foresters will be out practicing twice a week--getting a chance to officially run around in the sun with their teammates. More on this to come...

Four of our number (Jocelyn, BZ, CC, and Webby) are in Greece for a couple months with an off-campus program. Hopefully we will have a blog update from them in the coming weeks.

#3 Emily Sadler, '10

How'd you end up at LFC? Long story. I came to the Chicago area for a Leadership Convention I was chosen to participate in the summer going into my senior year of high school. When I came to the city I fell in love with it and wanted to look into schools in the area. I had never really been dead set on a certain college or university growing up so my options were open. I looked into colleeges in the the area and happened to stumble upon Lake Forest. I got more information, had a great admissions director, saw theat there was a good chance I could play soccer here too, which was a great opportunity to meet people coming from so far away. I only applied to one school in Illinois and that was Lake Forest. The rest I applieed to were back in my home state of Washington. After getting into several back home as well as LFC, I decided to go for it, take the risk and see how I like it. I've never regretted my deicison to come here.

Best soccer memory? Beating Grinnell my sophomore year and scoring the game-winning goal. Such an overeall good team feeling.

Nickname? How'd you get it? My nicknname is E-Money. Now I'm not exactly sure how I got this name, you'd have to ask T.R. "Em" was too ordinary, "Sadler" was overused, so "E-Money" naturally follows that succession.

Team you most like to play? Least like to play? Most like to beat? For me, Grinnell has always been a team that was a love/hate relationsjip. I love to play them and love to beat them, but hate playing them all at the same time. If I had to choose another one I'd say St. Norbert is up there too. It's a team you love to beat. I don't really have a team I least like to play, other than maybe Beloit or Monmouth, because those games always end up being too close for comfort. We always end up winning because they're must win, but they're usually not the prettiest games, which probably contributes to why I least like to play there.

Favorite practice drill or game: Thunderdome or any fun shooting drill or something that is competitive and upbeat

Words of wisdom for Freshmen or recruits: If you're looking to play soccer at a competitive level, for a fun and hard-working group of girls, while going to a school that gives you so many options for academics and involvement, Lake Forest is probably your best option. The City of Chicago is a train ride away and has endless opportunities within it. make sure you can choose a school that's right for you? Have fun and enjoy the four years while you can because they go by faster than you can imagine. Soccer was such a great addition to my Lake Forest experience and gave me four very memorable seasons. It was a great way to make lifelong friend and compete as a team to succeed on the field.

Favorite class or Professor: I'm an English and Communications major so all of my classes involve a lot of reading and writing...but overall favorite classes have been Post-Modernism, Rhetoric of Humor and Visual Communications. Favorite Prof is probably eithere Prof. Schneidereman in the English dept and Prof. Park or Prof. Benacka in the Communications Dept. It's a toos up. I can't pick favorites.

Other organiziations, activities, etc...you are involved in: Senior Steering Committee. Leadership Scholar.




Favorite teammate? Why? Speaking of not picking favorites...This is going to be cheesy, but I've really enjoyed the past four years with my fellow seniors, Jocelyn and Monica. They've always worked hard and have been supportive of me throughout the years and I'm so happy that we finished up our soccer careers together and had a great four years on the field togther.

Regrets? None that I can think of, I only wish I had more time on the team after having such a great culminating season with the girls this year. We worked hard on the field and had a great teeam relationship off the field. Leaving the field after our tough loss against St. Norbert was a sad moment, but I know that next year will be a great year for the team and I can only hope that we can take it to SNC next year and make it to the NCAA tourney. Good luck ladies!

#14 Jocelyn Maneval, '10

Over the next weeks, we'll be posting a quick question and answer session with each of our three seniors.

How'd you end up at Lake Forest? I wanted to go to a school far from home and also play soccer. My Mom knew about LFC because she grew up in the area and thought I'd enjoy the community; the facilities were also the best I had visited.

Best soccer memory? Any overnight road trip

Nickname? How'd you get it? Joc/Jocey: always had it

Team you most like to play? Team you least like to play? Team you love to beat? St. Norbert; Knox; Grinnell

Favorite practice drill/game? Butts-Up

Words of wisdom for freshmen or recruits? Live on South campus and avoid classes that go 'til 3:50 while in season, if you can.

Other organizations, activities, etc... you participate in on campus? Academics

Favorite teammate? My fellow seniors, fine group of ladies

Regrets? Not studying abroad*


*In an illustration of the enormous benefits of attending a small school, Joc wrote these responses two weeks ago. Last week, she learned that a group of Lake Forest students (including two of her teammates), who have been planning on going to Greece for four months this spring, were one student short of the quota needed to go. On a Wednesday night, Joc decided she was going to try to appeal the school rule requiring seniors to be on campus their last semester. By Saturday, she had talked to her parents, who gave the okay; spoken to her advisor, who greased the wheels for the appeal; emailed Coach Bell, who wrote a recommendation; and had her appeal granted by the Administration. She is currently waiting to hear if her application to the program will be approved...Good luck Joc!


Teammates and coaches were asked to submit a word or a short summary of Jocelyn.

Teammates say: Hardworking (5 different people used this same word), motivated, hilarious, dexterous--since throughout her time at LFC she played in several positions, passionate (three teammates used this word), I don't know if I'll ever have another teammate people refer to as the silent killer, always there, destructive, dedication and hustle, determined, Jocey Bear, scary, Definitely a player who is "silent but deadly"--she doesn't say much but she can run circles around people on the field. Her stoicism and hard work cannot be replaced and will be greatly missed by all.

Coaches say: silent killer, competitive, crazy, run-through-a-wall type of player.**

**Apparently her family has noticed many of these same qualities. Her brother, Jordan, was the one who scanned the photos posted above. In the email he wrote to her he included this little tidbit: Not really sure what you are thinking in these photos. One makes you look like a demon, as if to say, "Let's get these dumb photos over with. I've got goals to score and hopes to kill!"


There is a motto painted on the wall of one of the locker rooms at Monmouth College. I've seen it before, but I took special notice it this year. We had just finished up our last regular season game--a victory over the Fighting Scots, and I was thinking about the seniors and their four years on the team when I saw this:

Don't brag about you've accomplished
Don't tell people what you are going to do
Keep your mouth shut
Keep your mind on your own business

Early Success In The Winter Season

For those soccer players who only play one sport, the end of the season usually means learning how to stay disciplined when one suddenly has loads of free time in the afternoons and on the weekends.

But for those athletes who aren't content to merely represent the Foresters on the soccer field, life has remained busy.

Mira Trebilcock, the soccer program's favorite Canadian, was an immediate help to her "other" team, despite missing the preseason practices and the team trip to UW-Superior. She scored two goals at Augsburg College (MN) last weekend to help her team twice defeat the Auggies 6-1. Although Mira has been ill with the flu this week (get well, get well soon, we want you to get well) the Women's Hockey team has continued to win against conference rival Finlandia University (MI). Mira will be back on her feet soon and skating with the Foresters, who are currently ranked #10 in the country.


Emily Weber hasn't had to deal with the flu, but she did have to get her shot back after spending the soccer season avoiding touching the ball with her hands. Luckily, for both her and her teammates, she is a quick study. After a not-so-great showing on the offensive end of the court last Tuesday against UW-Oshkosh, Webby poured in a career high 18 on Friday against the Alverno Inferno and followed that up with 12 more (along with taking a sweet charge and picking up 4 assists) against Loras College on Saturday. With those two victories the Women's Basketball team won their Tip-Off Tournament and Webs was one of two Foresters named to the All-Tournament team. Congrats!

BZ Greene did not compete in the Illinois Handball Association's Contenders Tournament over the weekend, choosing instead to rest on her laurels. BZ was the C-Division champion in last weekend's Singles Tournament, and we look forward to more handball victories from Beezer and her teammates soon.

Coming Soon--Your Seniors!

Over the next week or two we will be featuring our three seniors. The three wise (wo)men will offer advice, counsel, and perspective, along with a little humor. I think you'll find that their responses will pretty accurately reflect their personalities. Jocelyn's approach to words remains the same: less is more. E-Money is considerate, contemplative, and thoughtful. And Mon, well Mon is late getting back to me, so maybe that says it all... :)

Soccer, Soccer Everywhere

One of the very cool things about attending school at Lake Forest is the proximity to Chicago. The train is so safe, clean, accessible, cheap, and easy to use that getting from campus to downtown is a fairly regular event for most students.

And there are infinite number of things to do in the country's third-largest city. Of course, this being a soccer blog, I have to mention that one of them is attending soccer games.


Chicago has one of the best soccer-only stadiums in the country in Toyota Park. It is home to The Chicago Fire (MLS) The Chicago Red Stars (WPS) and has hosted more than a few U.S. National Team games. Last spring the Men's and Women's soccer teams took a group trip down there to watch a Fire game. Last fall the Women's team caravan-ed to see the U.S. Women's National Team play Japan. And hopefully, this spring, we will travel to see the Red Stars in their second season of play.

Saturday night though, was all about the Chicago Fire. They were playing in the Eastern Conference Final against Real Salt Lake. The winner would earn the right to play Landon Donovan, David Beckham, and the rest of the L.A. Galaxy in the MLS Cup Final.


Forester Molly "Goggles" Shaw was among the 40 or so Utah natives cheering for Real. The rest of the 21,000+ in the sold out stadium were definitely pulling for the Fire. After a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation and 2 15-minute scoreless overtimes, the game went into a shootout. After the first five PKs both teams had made three. On the 6th kick the Real GK made a save and the Real kicker missed. But the Fire were not so lucky on the 7th. The Real GK made ANOTHER save (his third of the shootout) and then the Real striker buried his PK for the victory.



The home crowd was extremely disappointed but it was a memorable match.
